There are many lessons to be learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, especially as we prepare for future epidemics and pandemics. So, what can the WASH sector do now to prepare for the next crisis?

Agenda for Change Global Coordinator, Susan Davis, contributed to the recent Devex article ‘5 ways the WASH sector can prepare for the next crisis,’ which includes the following recommendations: better planning; building relationships; improving coordination; using data; and, investing in WASH systems strengthening as a safeguard for the future.

Regarding funding for the future, Davis says, “the division between humanitarian or emergency funding and development funding is artificial, it speaks more to the motivation of donors than the actual needs of the people being helped.” Bottom line: donors should ensure that funding for WASH systems strengthening continues in the face of crisis.
