Government representatives and stakeholders in Mozambique assess the strength of the WASH system building blocks using a participatory assessment tool (Charles Scott/WaterAid)
Sustainable Development Goal 6 requires that WASH service improvements happen at scale, and there is a growing consensus in the sector that achieving this goal is only possible with strong WASH systems to underpin these services. With that in mind, Agenda for Change members (‘Members’) are strengthening WASH systems in several countries using diverse approaches and accumulating valuable learning in the process. The latest paper from the collaboration documents the approaches and experiences of some Members, most of which are international non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
The paper has the following broad objectives:
- Describing the concepts and framework that Members use for analysing systems and expanding on how they use these tools in specific contexts to identify potential entry points to influence and strengthen systems;
- Providing practical examples of systems strengthening efforts in different contexts; and
- Discussing the journeys that Members have gone through in progressively embracing systems strengthening approaches.
In the coming year, Members will build on the case studies and examples presented in this paper to provide further evidence and accelerate collective learning and action to effectively drive change within and beyond the Agenda for Change collaboration.
